Q & A
5. 何為「非常一搏」系列節目 (Give it a Shot)? (詳情請瀏覽網頁 BOKfestival.com) |
1. What is BOK Festival?
Simply put, it is a theatre festival. It was started in 2013 by the Macanese non-governmental art group “Horizon Macau Theatre Group”, when they established a new privately-run black box theatre. In 2015, it was organized through the union of several small theatres in the Avenida de Venceslau de Morais area. And in 2016 we’re moving beyond this area, and also out of the small theatres, extending into all the “performable” spaces. 2. Why are there two “theatres” in its Chinese name (“Theatre x Theatre”)? The first meaning of “theatre” is any kind of performance site, and the second meaning is the performance that takes place in a certain space. Regardless of the genre or type, we call it theatre. 3. What is “BOK”? Artists need to be constantly innovating. However, due to the market or other factors, they gradually start to create according to “safe” norms, and sometimes they need to “give it their all” and try a new creative path not plagued by inertia. In the same way, the audience also gets used to a kind of pattern as a viewer, and is reluctant to try out new experiences. The artists can step out of their comfort zone and the audience can step out of their comfortable seats and try to see the work from a different angle and with a different attitude. They’re “giving their all”, together. And BOK, meaning to seize or take a risk, as well as its homonym, meaning to refute, implies a transfer. Besides the transfer between artist and audience, it is a continuous transfer between audience and theatre, theatre and community, community and region. 4. How many “BOK’s” are there? Art is subjective, everyone has their own artistic views, and there’s no need to unify them all. Therefore, we hope the artists are able to enjoy the creative process, and that the audience is also able to enjoy taking part in it. The interaction between the two is what gives value to this “theatre”. When the “BOK levels” between the two are elevated, the enjoyment in the process will also increase. Therefore, there can be as many “BOK’s” as you want. 5. What is the “Give it a Shot” series? Every year we invite artists from Macau and neighboring regions to try a creative method outside of their comfort zone in order to challenge themselves. The goal is not to create a “complete perfect” work in the first stage, the most important is the possibility of exploration and development. In this way, the work goes through several stages, and the audience’s participation in one of the stages (viewing the work) makes them, in a way, a part of the creative process. The interaction between the audience and the artist can create a beautiful process. 6. As an audience, how do you find your “BOK”? a. If you want to better understand an artist, if you like discussing a show with different members of the audience and enjoy visiting the various artistic spaces in the Macau community, we recommend you choose the “Give it a Shot” series. Every item on the program contains two presentations by two different artists in two different theatres. After one is over, the audience travels on foot to another theatre for the second artist. After the second one there will be the BOK Club activities, in which you can have a discussion with the artists or the other members of the audience. b. If your wish is to see a complete show, we recommend you choose the three main programmes. These are all works from outside of Macau or new collaboration that were programmed by us, and they still possess that exploratory nature. 7. What is BOK Club? BOK Club is like a laid-back party held in a different theater every night after the shows. It allows the audience and the artist to interact with each other. This will give the audience a deeper understanding of the creative work and provide the artists with new inspiration. (For more details, please visit BOKfestival.com) |
